After an outstanding scholastic career at East Meadow High School, Montgomery attended Nassau Community College and became a Junior College All-America selection. He transferred to Adelphi and became an impact defender from 1972-73. He went on receive his bachelor's degree (1975) and master's degree (1984) from Adelphi.
