Flushing, NY - Adelphi Men's Tennis opened up their 2008 regular season play at the East Coast Conference Flight Championships at Queens College, Flushing, New York. The Panthers had a strong showing with three making it to the semi-final matches, and Sebastian Nieves in the number five singles and the duo of Nicolas Sanchez-Sousa and Joseph Carbone in the number three doubles making it to the finals. Senior Captain Tomasz Walczak led off with a three game win over Queens College's Taylor Crabill, 6-4, 7-6, 7-2, in the number one semi-final spot. Anton Voynov in the number four position was able to overcome Michael Antolini of St. Thomas Aquinas College, 6-2, 6-0, in the semi-finals. Highlighting the Panthers' weekend in the number five singles was Sebastian Nieves. Nieves picked up a bye in the quarters and won his semifinal match up, 6-2, 6-0 over Marcelo Kem of Queens College. Facing Kirill Azoytsey of Concordia College, Nieves lost two close matches, 6-2, 6-3. The pair of Sanchez and Carbone led the Brown and Gold in doubles competition with a default loss in the finals against Vlad Malkin and Vito Galatioto of Concordia. Tennis action continues when they travel to Pleasantville, New York to take on the Pace University Setters, Friday, February 29. |
