Box Score

Brookville, N.Y. - Despite a late rally, the Adelphi University softball team fell to Caldwell College, 6-4, in the third round of the NCAA DII Regionals. With the loss, the Panthers (41-21) are eliminated from the tournament, while the Cougars (35-21) advance to face New Haven later today.

Danielle Genovese put Caldwell up early with a solo homerun in the first inning. Brittni Frantellizzi scored on a bases loaded walk in the second, then hit an RBI double in the third to open the Cougars lead.

Caldwell's lead ballooned to 5-0 with two more runs in the fifth inning. Adelphi rallied in the sixth inning with three runs. First, junior Kristin Brennan drove in junior Diana DiPiano. Then junior Jessica Vogt scored on a fielder's choice and an error by third base, followed by Brennan crossing home plate on a sac fly by junior Angela Martin.

Nicole Bodrog's RBI double in the seventh pushed the lead back, 6-3. In the bottom of the seventh, senior Dely Francisco singled and stole second, then scored on a sophomore Katie Brophy single, 6-4. But this would prove to be the closest the Panthers would get.

DiPiano went 3-4 with one run and Brennan was 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI. DiPiano and Vogt were each selected to the All-Tournament Team.

This marked the Panthers third straight NCAA Regional appearance. Their 41 wins this season sets a new school DII record, just one win shy of the overall 42 win record set by the DI team in 1983.
