The mission of Adelphi University's intercollegiate athletic program is to advance the winning spirit and drive that characterize all great institutions. We promote a total person concept to our students, a concept that stresses their abilities to excel in athletic competition, in academic achievement and in developing positive character traits that will be of sustaining value to the individual and society. Our balanced program provides student-athletes with an opportunity not only to distinguish themselves on a nationally competitive scale but also to enjoy the process of maturation and achievement along the way. We are committed to the highest standards of sportsmanship, teamwork, scholarship and citizenship. Adelphi University's Athletic Department, staff, and students work closely with each other to create a safe and supportive, yet highly challenging and rewarding, environment. We seek to recruit, train, educate and graduate first class student-athletes. The University provides the necessary support for our student-athletes to focus intensively on their top priorities and back that support with a broad base of institutional allocations. We are a financially sound department. We manage our budget in a responsible fashion and appreciate the generous support of the University and a wide variety of individuals and organizations. In pursuit of our goals, we foster enthusiasm and camaraderie among all who participate in our program and encourage its success. Our department has a strong sense of tradition in all of our programs. We strive to make our program an enduring source of pride for participants, alumni, the University and the broader communities of which we are part. We expect athletes to support each other. In order to maintain our momentum as a Division II nationally competitive program, we set high but obtainable goals for our programs. We are continually searching for ways to improve our performance and our facilities as well as national recognition. Please be very aware that new facilities are now being constructed. We, like the University as a whole, seek to attract promising students and therefore have assembled the resources necessary to facilitate their intellectual and social growth. Our staff encourages initiative and develops independent critical thinking and problem solving skills. At the same time, we teach the value of teamwork. All of this increases graduation rates and continued growth beyond the undergraduate years. We are committed to the total health and welfare of our student-athletes. Our program is based upon sound coaching principles and integrates the latest knowledge concerning training and conditioning. This includes a strong commitment to educate and inform our students about abuse of alcohol and drugs, hazing and its ramifications, eating disorders, anger control and proper social behavior. Consistent with our goal of developing positive character and leadership qualities in our student-athletes, we conform to the letter and spirit of all rules and regulations of the University and athletic bodies of which we are privileged to be members, such as the NCAA, ECAC and the ECC. Athletics being what it is to the social fabric of America we anticipate the public need for information concerning our programs. Our Athletic Media Relations Department strives to meet these needs in a straight-forward and enthusiastic manner that promotes involvement as well as awareness. We also believe that our own students are the best ambassadors our University has and, therefore, we encourage their involvement in all kinds of community service. |
